FREE THE POLITICAL PRISONER ALEH SURHAN!
The case of 47-year-old Aleh Surhan has been considered in the court by nearly 2 months. The BCD activist is accused in resistance to the police. The incident took place on September 3rd 2009. Aleh Surhan and his brother Taras were detained at the bus stop near the building of the medical university, on top of which the white-red-white flag was hung out.
The police arrested him and stated in the protocol, that he resisted to the arrest and had bitten the policeman’s finger.
According to Aleh Surhan, the first protocol about the white-red-white flag disappeared and was substituted by the one where it was stated that he had been in the public place under the influence of alcohol and sworn badly, insulting the policemen.
Aleh Surhan also stated that the policemen beat him in the police department on September 03. Taras Surhan called the ambulance when he saw his brother. The doctors stated maims of his head and arms.
After Aleh Surhan had filed a claim to the public prosecutor’s office about the actions of the police, a criminal case was initiated against him.
Aleh Surhan was under court for criminal actions in the past, but in the year 2009 he has repented and come to the Lord. He took the decision to make satisfaction for his sins before the Lord and people. Since autumn 2009, Aleh Surhan actively participated in Vitsebsk civic movement and the BCD, helped to create the movement “Young Belarus”.
We consider the sentence to Aleh Surhan exclusively politically motivated. It is obvious that Aleh was sentenced not for “resistance to the police” but for hanging out the white-red-white flag and for friendship with Siarhei Kavalenka, for his active civic position. His sentence is a warning to the Belarusian Christian Democracy.
We appeal to the Belarusian society and the international community to support the campaign of solidarity “Free the political prisoner Aleh Surhan!”
We appeal to the Amnesty International and other human rights organizations to consider Aleh Surhan a prisoner of conscience.
We also demand that other political prisoners of the current regime, namely, Mikalaj Autukhovich, Uladzimer Asipenka, the member of the Young Front Artsiom Dubski, the believer Ivan Mikhailau, should be released immediately.
Free the political prisoners!
