THE MEMBERS OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT ARE TRYING TO REACH AGREEMENT ON THE “EURONEST” ISSUE
The mission consists of the Head of the delegation of the European Parliament in the Euronest, socialist Kristian Vigenin (Bulgaria); socialist Justas Paleckis (Lithuania) – the reporter on the situation in Belarus in the international commission of the European Parliament; the member of the Liberal fraction, the Head of the delegation on Belarus Jacek Protasiewicz (Poland) and Heidi Hautala (Finland), the member of the Green party, who heads the subcommission on human rights.
According to the Radio Liberty, the members of the European Parliament refused to enter the building of the Belarusian Parliament. Thus, a meeting with the Heads of commissions of the Council of Republic Nina Mazaj and the House of Representatives Siargei Maskevich will take place at a neutral territory – in the National Library. The representative of the administration of the European Parliament Mikhail Chaplitsky explained to the correspondent of the Radio Liberty:
“We do not meet the parliament in the building of parliament. We do not acknowledge the Belarusian Parliament, and this position of the European Parliament has not change».
It is still unknown whether the delegation will meet with the representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The mission has made an enquiry for the meeting, but received no response so far. The Press-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Andrej Papou commented the situation as follows:
«When we have news, we will inform that the meeting took place. If it does. I don’t see anything unusual in this. Wait for the information».
The meeting of the delegation of the European Parliament with the Co-Chairman of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Vital Rymasheuski is planned on February 26, 2010.
The representative of the administration of the European Parliament Mikhail Chaplitsky explained the main aim of the visit as follows:
«The main aim of the delegation is discussion of the topic of participation of Belarus in the Parliamentary Assembly “Euronest” with the Belarusian side. It was not an invitation from the Belarusian side; however, it was their positive response to our initiative.”
In the end of the visit the mission of the European Parliament is planning to conduct a press-conference. The European Parliament will also issue a resolution regarding the situation in Belarus upon the results of their visit to Minsk.
