THE BCD APPEALS TO REMEMBER LARYSA HENIUSH ON THE DAY OF FREEDOM
The Congress of Belarusians of the world which took place last year in Minsk declared the year 2010 a year of Larysa Heniush. The National Council of the BCD approved this decision and appealed to dedicate this year’s celebration of the Day of Freedom to Larysa Heniush.
The national martyr has not been rehabilitated by the state yet. Although her poetic talent does not require any justifications, still, such situation disgraces our Homeland and fellow-countrymen of Larysa Heniush.
In 1999 the Belarusian Helsinki Committee addressed to the public prosecutor’s office of the republic of Belarus demanding to abolish the unfair sentence with regard to Larysa and Janka Heniush. The public prosecutor’s office transferred the appeal to the Supreme Court, which declined the appeal stating that “the poet cannot be rehabilitated on legal grounds”.
There was another appeal in 2007 filed by the civic steering committee on honouring the memory of the victims of Stalin’s repressions, which was also declined. The reasons of refusal were not revealed as, according to the Supreme Court, “they can be informed only to the repressed herself”. This year, in the Year of Memory, the Belarusian society appeals to the authorities again demanding to rehabilitate the famous poet.
