THE POPE WILL VISIT BELARUSIAN PEOPLE, NOT LUKASHENKA
The leader of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Paval Sevyarynec commented upon the information about the possible visit of Benedict XVI to Belarus in Spring-Summer 2010.
“After Lukashenka’s coming to Vatican this spring, the visit of Benedict XVI to Belarus looks natural. In spite of questions of political character to the regime, the Pope will visit Belarusian people, not Lukashenka. The Head of Catholic Church never visited Belarus during 2000 years. If such a visit takes place now, it will be a historical event for Belarus. It can also have a symbolic meaning for the Christian country in the center of Europe, and can be the reason for a great spiritual upheaval. Belarusian Christian Democracy welcomes the intention of Benedict XVI and hopes that his visit will stimulate strengthening of Christian values, Belarusian independence and self-consciousness of Belarusians as a European nation,- stated the politician in the interview to the press-service of the Belarusian Christian Democracy.
