Statement on the political pressure on a democratic activist
Statement on the political pressure on democratic activist Alaksei Miliukou (Zhalnou), member of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada).
We, representatives of the Belarusian democratic forces, demand to immediately stop political pressure on the Belarusian Social Democratic Party activist Alaksei Miliukou (Zhalnou).
We believe that the disciplinary action applied to Alaksei Miliukou, while he serves the sentence in a correctional facility of open type in Novapolatsk, are the so-called “professional revenge” of the police for standing for his rights and requiring a proper salary. In the result of this disciplinary action a new criminal case was initiated against the democratic activist.
We believe that the persecution of Belarusian citizens by the police due to their political engagement and speaking of the facts of law violations is unprofessional and settling of personal accounts.
We believe that the “professional revenge ” of the police officers was the true cause of the imprisonment of Alaksei Miliukou. The recent transfer of him from one correctional open type institution to another is nothing, but an attempt to separate him from his family, to deprive of the work place, to humiliate his professional ability.
We call for the immediate end to such practices of law abuse and to terminate the criminal case, which was brought against Alaksei Miliukou for violation of the detention regime.
We call upon all human rights organizations in Belarus to recognize Alaksei Miliukou as political prisoner and the verdict against him as illegal, and continue to struggle for his release.
