Statement on the nuclear power plant construction in Astravets
The organisers of the march “Chernobyl Way-2017”, which will
take place on 26 April 2017 in Minsk, support the statement of the round table
“Stop the nuclear power plant construction in Belarus!”:
Stop the construction of the nuclear power plant in Belarus!
The construction of the nuclear power plant continues in Astravets
(Hrodna voblast, Belarus). The decision to build a nuclear power plant in the country,
which in 1986 received dramatic consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, was
made by the state authorities despite the clear negative opinion of the public,
independent and international experts.
Construction of a nuclear power plant on Astravets site is out of
question: the experts have proved the dangers of this location for a nuclear
power plant.
Over the past few months a number of accidents and fatalities have taken
place on the construction site. The contractor had to replace the reactor, which fell from the
height of the ground, however, aslo the new reactor was also damaged
during its transportation to Astravets.
We, the participants of the round table “Stop the nuclear power
plant construction in Belarus!”, express our indignation at the fact that,
despite the threats related to the selected site, serious accidents, the construction of a
nuclear power plant according to the Russian project continues in the area of
Astravets, Belarus.
Repeated incidents during the construction and installation of the
reactor confirm the gloomiest forecasts of the experts, observers,
environmentalists and residents of Belarus: the launch of the NPP in Astravets
can result in a catastrophe for our country and for European countries.
We urge the authorities to immediately stop the construction of nuclear
power plants.
We urge the international community, experts and leaders of the
democratic forces to prepare and carry out a representative conference in Minsk
dedicated to the discussion and development of ways to stop the construction at
Astravets NPP.
We call on the representatives of the Belarusian democratic forces and
environmental movements to organize the march “Chernobyl Way-2017” on
26 April, 2017, under the slogan “Stop the nuclear power plant in
Belarus!”.
