BCD leader for Brest region and leader for Brest city detained by police
The Belarusian police started preventive detentions of the BCD leaders and activists in anticipation of the coming Constituent Congress of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Party, which has to take place on 17 December 2011.
On 15 December 2011 the leader of the BCD organisation for Brest region, Zmitser Shurkhaj and the leader of the BCD Brest city organisation, Alaksandr Charkashyn, were detained by the road police while they were approaching Brest on a car after visiting local groups of the party.
The BCD activists were detained on suspicion that the car they were driving allegedly run over a pedestrian in Minsk. After the detention Mr. Shurkhaj and Mr. Charkashyn waited for two hours in Maskouski police department in Brest for the expert, who was supposed to check their car. But instead the head of Brest traffic police gave an order to register an administrative crime – dirty swearing in public. Provided that the court hearing may take place on 16 December 2011, the next night both men may spend in jail. Thus, the police reports made in both cases is a complete fraud, which does not correspond to reality.
“It’s an incredible impudence! Our activists were detained on the road on the eve of the Constituent Congress without any grounds, and then it turns out that they were “swearing”! Of course, the BCD will draw conclusions from this and give the corresponding assessment to the police actions. We will warn all of our activists to be very careful when they go to the Congress in Minsk, “- said the BCD executive secretary Dzianis Sadouski.
