Support Yauhen Vaskovich!
The Belarusian Christian Democracy Party calls on its partners and all concerned persons to express support to Belarusian political prisoner Yauhen Vaskovich. Since October 2011 he spent 247 days in a penal cell.
The BCD executive secretary Dzianis Sadouski reported that the latest 10 days of a penal cell punishment Vaskovich spent starting from 27 December 2013 and celebrated New Year’s Eve in a lockup.
Political prisoner Yauhen Vaskovich is serving an unjust and inadequate punishment term and strong pressure is put on him on the part of the administration of the penitentiary institution in order to make him sign a petition for pardon.
The majority of so-called punishments are issued with the same wording: “for refusing to follow legitimate demands of prison staff”. On average Yauhen spends 15-20 days in a penal cell a month. At the height of 186 centimeters the political prisoner only weights 65 kilograms. This can be compared with the conditions in which the prisoners of the Soviet GULAG camp were kept or the fascist concentration camp. Also messages and packages from friends are received by the prisoner quite irregularly, as well as his letters to them.
This is certainly a very critical situation. The BCD calls on international organisations and human rights activists to protest and call the prison to stop torture against political prisoner Yauhen Vaskovich.
Yauhen Vaskovich was convicted together with Arciom Prakapienka and Paviel Syramalotau. On 18 May 2011 he was sentenced to 7 years in high-security prison by the Babruisk District and City Court under the article 339, part 2 (malignant hooliganism) and the article 218, part 2 (large-scale destruction of property) for the attack on the KGB building in Babruisk (on 17 October 2010). No one was injured during the attack, the damage to the building was estimated at 253,000 rubles (56 USD). He was put in a penal cell multiple times. Later the political prisoner was transferred from a penal colony to the prison in Mahileu as a “malicious violator of the penitentiary regime”.
